10th Anniversary of Honest Life

Today marks the 10 year anniversary of the initial USA release of Courtney Marie Andrews’ breakthrough album Honest Life.

Courtney Marie Andrews said of the anniversary:

“I was twenty-four. I was a songwriter, a bartender, a backup singer, a restaurant singer, a down to the last dollar traveler, and most of all a woman with a lot of dreams and magical thinking.

Honest Life was written while I was heartbroken and living in Belgium as a backup singer. I used every cent from those tours to record. I grew up hearing and experiencing a lot of jargon about what it means to be a woman in the music industry. I thought it all sounded ridiculous. So, I produced my own album with old friends at Litho in Seattle. Once the record was finished, I lived off tips from bartending at Duvall Tavern, and waited a whole year to release it.

This album marked a true beginning in my life. I’ll never forget arriving to Cardiff, Wales, and singing these songs to a room full of strangers for the first time. The year before I did a tour where I slept upright in a Honda Accord for many nights. Musicians know. The path can be rocky, but we love it. I loved the floors and the beds, the whole process. I loved it all, and still do.
