The Duke & The King

AmericanaUKThis has got to be the last of the 2010 Best of lists, but what with the love shown for The Duke & The King and Danny & The Champs, we couldn’t not share with you the Americana UK Staff Writers’ Top 10s.

Take a look at the lists in full HERE. Allow us to share with you the highlights…

Topping the The Americana-Uk Editorial Team’s Top Ten of 2010, we have Long Live The Duke & The King, beating so many great albums by the likes of John Grant, Phosphorescent, Drive-By Truckers and Justin Townes Earle.

“What we have here is a near enough perfect exposition of Americana – that crossroads (to paraphrase Levon Helm) where folk, blues and soul meet, shake hands and share a drink”

The writers then had their own say in their individual polls. Here’s what they had to say about Long Live The Duke & The King:

Another glorious creation from Felice

Another Americana/soul mash up which pushes all the right buttons

A masterpiece of psychedelic country-soul, fully showcasing their ever-developing vocal playfulness

The Duke & The King are currently the best live band on the planet and ‘Long Live The Duke & The King’ expands their musical palette with a worthy follow-up to last year’s ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay’

Meanwhile, editor Mark Whitfield places Danny & The ChampsStreets Of Our Time at No.7 on his list. This being our most favourite quote from the article:

The nicest bloke in music, Danny George Wilson, releases yet another album of classic sounding country-soul with his band of epic proportions, a genre which he almost owns himself he’s that good at it.

VJDD190_Champs_TimesLong Live The Duke & The KingThe Top Album Lists just keep on coming in. Here’s the latest…

Coming in at No. 19 on the Beat Surrender list, we have The Duke & The King. Following close behind at No. 27, Danny & The Champions Of The World.

Our friends over at one of our favourite record shops, Rapture, have awarded Danny & The Champs 2nd place in their overall Top 10 of 2010. Take a look. If you’re ever anywhere round Oxfordshire way, make sure you drop in and say hello to them at their great little record shop in Witney.

Head on over to Bucketfull Of Brains and you shall see that both Danny & The Champs and Duke & The King make it onto yet another top 10 list. Wonderful.

Brighton’s Gilded Palace Of Sin place Streets Of Our Time at No.3 on their list, with a fantastic little review, referring to Danny  as “the Neil Young of New Cross, Springsteen via Surbiton“.

Timeless” says [Sic] Magazine‘s Rob Gannon, when describing Streets Of Our Time, which he places at No.20 in his list.

Finally, here’s a good one from the Black Powder Smoke blog over the other side of the pond – “A bunch of Brits put out one of the best Americana albums in recent memory“. Fantastic. Coming in at No.6 in that list.

Battery In Your LegMark, over on the fantastic Battery In Your Leg website, has revealed his Top 10 albums of 2010. We took a little look and were rather impressed to see Long Live The Duke & The King coming in at No.8, Danny & The Champions Of The WorldStreets Of Our Time, in at No.4. What fantastic taste he has. Take a look at the full list over here.

Then over on the Blurred Clarity blog, Danny & The Champs are awarded the top spot – No.1! Take a look at the rather lovely little review of the album here.

Long Live The Duke & The KingLong Live The Duke & The King has been placed at No. 32 in Uncut’s 50 Best Albums of 2010 list and  No.4 in their 20 Best Americana Albums of the year! The new issue of the magazine also features single, Shaky on the free CD.

If the Felice Brothers initially seemed to be Woodstock-dwelling Band acolytes, subsequent releases have revealed a much wider-ranging bunch. Hence Simone Felice’s second album with The D&K, which evolved their sound from Laurel Canyon reveries to this invocation of cosmic country soul.

However, if the magazine’s editor, Allan Jones, had full say on the list, it would have been much nearer the top of the list. He mentions the album as being in his personal top 10!

Not heard it? Really?? Well it is, of course, in the Loose shop, here. Also on beautiful vinyl, with free album download.

UPDATED 06 JAN 2011:
Then coming in at No.31 in the Uncut Reader’s poll!

Unfortunately, the D&TK have had to cancel their remaining European tour dates. This includes Cologne tonight, Berlin, Hamburg & Paris.

Here is the official statement from the band;

“We are very sad to announce The Duke & The King will be cancelling the remaining European tour dates in Germany and France due to sickness and bereavement within the band.

The band wants to thank all their fans for their amazing love and support and promise to return as soon as possible to continue the magic they started in the UK and Ireland.

Big Love

The Duke & the King”
